3百年以前「霧峰地區」是原住民活動的天地，各社住民主要以狩獵維生，部份地帶也間作游耕式的粗放農作。直到280多年前，清廷官府在台中盆地東緣，劃定「番漢界線」本地區也設立「官隘」，配置「隘丁」駐守，漢人隨著進入拓墾，「漢草原界線」逐漸由西向東推移。 18世紀中葉，漢人開始在本地鑿築水渠，營作農業，落地生根，形成了不少聚落。漢原族群消長的結果，原住民終於退出本地，遷徙至東高峻的山區，另覓生存空間。 本文旨在探討霧峰地區從清代聚落的形成、日治時期主要市集的榮枯、戰後街市高質的轉型等變透過程，藉以了解霧峰商業活動蛻變的面貌。

The Area of Wu-fong was once the wonderland for Taiwanese aborigines three hundred years ago. The habitants of each group lived on hunting, and they were engaged in fanning of moving about in search of pasture and farm crops. However, the Chin government took steps of delimiting the demarcation between the Hans and Formosa aborigines establishing the official passes, and arranging the guards. Then, the diaspora of Hans kept developing their cultivation hence forth, and this movement caused the changing of the demarcation lined from the western to the eastern gradually. In the middle 18th, the Hans started their livings from excavating the irrigating canals to developing their agriculture. The Han immigrants not only rooted in this area, but also formed the amount of settlements. Consequently, the rise of Hans resulted in the declination of aborigines, and forced them to withdraw, immigrate to the higher, steeper area of mountain to restart from the very beginning. The main subject of the thesis can be discussed from the formation of Chin settlements in the Wu-fong area, the rise and fall of the main markets in the Japanese ruling period, and to the process, changing of the after-war transformation of commercial and trading business. By the means of multidimensinal researches, we could understand le changing of commercial activity with clearer comprehensions in Wu-fong.
