As an important cultural center during the middle of the Tang Dynasty, Huzhou attracted plenty of literati figures. Yan Zhenqing, Zhang Zhihe, and Jiao Ran were Lu Yu’s most close friends in Huzhou. They shared similarities in terms of personality, honesty, life style, and cultural upbringing. They were all great poets and enjoyed to roam in nature. While they had distinctive achievement in various studies and artistic pursuits, they found close friendship in such companionship. Furthermore, their lifestyles were tending towards the Daoism, seeking to strengthen the body and to elevate the spirit through ingestion of food. Lu Yu instilled this concept in the tea culture, making tea an important object to maintain the bodily health and to experience and achieve the Dao. Hence, poetry, nature, art, and diet to nourish life are the common life and culture of Lu Yu and his three friends. Their learnedness of all forms of studies, command of ancient poetry, and passion for nature inspire the development of art and culture of tea and lead to the distinctive creativity of Lu Yu.
