Mercury is a metal that is in liquid form at the room temperature. It is commonly used in industry to make thermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers, and gold extraction. However, due to the characteristic of high vapor pressure, mercury vapor can damage human body by poisoning via inhalation. The occupational exposure limits (OEL) for mercury vapor in Taiwan is 0.05 mg/m^3 TLV. The case presented in this paper is a 60-year-old male who participated in gold extraction by amalgamation with his friend. With no personal respirator protector and environment control available at that time, several uncomfortable symptoms developed after several hours. Skin rash occurred 2 days later and the mercury level in blood and urine were all high to confirm diagnosis of mercury intoxication. After chelator therapy, the skin rash disappeared. With this case and other relevant documents, this article intended to provide doctors with further knowledge on mercury intoxication. |
