This article provides explanations of troublesome and hard-to-identify words and phrases in ”Zhao-wang Hui Shi” (in Chu Bamboo Slips of the Warring States Period Collected in Shanghai Museum, vol.7). First, the phrase ”Ji Xing Ge Zhi (既□□之)” on slip number 1 should be read as ”Ji Xing, Ge Zhi (既行,格之)”, meaning the king had set out and reached the palace. The character ”Ge (格)” means ”arrive”. Second, the phrase ”Man Ting (曼廷)” on slip number 1 should be read as ”Fan Ting (犯廷)”, which means ”broke into the atrium”. Third, the phrase ”Zhao Kou (訋□)” on slip number 2 and slip number 4 should be read as ”Zao Kou (造寇)”, and means ”cause riots”. And lastly, the phrase ”Zhi Yong Hui Shi (至俑毀室)” on slip number 5 can be read as ”Zhi Yong Hui Shi (挃墉毀室)” which means ”tear down walls and demolish the palace.” |
