運動員心臟與病理性心臟具有一項共同的特徵,即心臟肥大的現象。病理性心臟的代償性肥大與運動員心臟肥大沒有區別,因此在實際的診察中,往往會有誤診的情形發生。是故,運動員心臟與病理性心臟的區別也就成為百年來心臟病學研究所關注的焦點。事實上,病理性心臟肥大乃因心臟對於壓力或容積超載的不適應結果;反之,生理性肥大則被認為是對於長期激烈運動訓練所產生的血液動力學負荷之適應現象,兩者之間在型態和功能上仍具有極明顯的差異存在。透過左心室結構型態和泵血功能參數的比較,如左心室壁厚度、左心室腔大小、左心室質量、收縮和舒張功能、停止訓練後的反應及其他標準等,可以有效區別運動員心臟與病理性心臟之間的差異,以作為運動員、教練和體育相關從業人員參考,避免運動猝死情形的發生,造成終身的遺憾。
