生物體必須調節體內各種組織系統，使其共同發揮作用，才能完成日常生活中各式各樣的動作技能。然而，這樣的機制卻隱藏著複雜且龐大的自由度問題。Bernstein認為人體為了掌控特殊動作中的眾多自由度，在初學時期會有凍結自由度的現象產生，而透過練習的機制，動作型態將轉變為釋放自由度。本文就自由度的觀點，回顧新近的相關研究，說明自由度的階段性轉變，並非單純地由凍結到釋放，而會取決於個體、工作與環境三種限制的交互作用，進而產生正向、逆向或可逆性的行為特徵。
