身體意象是對自己身材體態的主觀看法，除了心理及生理的自我認知外，亦受到社會層面的影響。身體意象的觀念對男女性皆有影響，但其中卻有某些程度的差異：女性對外表的重視程度及減重意圖高於男性，但對自己外表滿意度卻低於男性，且參與身體活動的主要目的是為了得到更佳的身體意象；男性參與身體活動的行為不受到體型滿意度的影響，其主要的目的是為了健身及雕塑身體線條。總之，身體意象影響個體改變自己的行為來達到理想中的身材體態，而如何對抗外表造成的心理負面影響，建立自我的認同，在現今瘦身風氣的潮流中，如此的思考方向尤其重要。
