體脂肪數量的多寡與健康有著密切關係,此外,脂肪所在的位置也與健康有著密切的關係。其中以蘋果型的腹部內臟脂肪肥胖與新陳代謝、心血管疾病的風險間最令人憂心。此種型態的肥胖者體內較高濃度的脂質(游離脂肪酸與低密度脂蛋白膽固醇)是可能導致胰島素阻抗與心血管疾病的因子。藉由身體活動或運動可改善脂質代謝或是胰島素阻抗現象外,還可以增加最大攝氧量、去脂體重與降低內臟脂肪的囤積。從不同屬性的受試者與運動課程設計的研究中發現,身體活動或是運動對於降低內臟脂肪囤積與改善血脂質的功效是受到肯定與值得推廣。
