飼養家畜、禽的過程中添加瘦肉精可提高養殖之經濟效益,但肉品若驗出含瘦肉精並不符合國內主管機關之規定,且食入過量的瘦肉精將對人體產生副作用。部分瘦肉精屬於運動禁藥中的β2致效劑,過去曾有運動選手疑似因食用含瘦肉精的肉品,而導致尿液檢體呈陽性反應的案例發生,雖然國內目前無類似案例發生,但藥物食品檢驗局抽驗肉品後發現,部分檢體含有會違反運動禁藥規範的瘦肉精,因此選手應多留心注意。
