The current study investigates the prevalence of sole puncturing in the work environment in central Taiwan by a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 403 workers (response rates=87.8%) were employed in construction, manufacturing, and hospitals at the time of the survey. The questionnaire gathered data in the following areas: individual factors, work environment, employees' shoes, and factors regarding punctured soles. The results indicate that environmental factors (75.7%), shoe factors (48.4%), and individual factors (24.8%) had the greatest effect on employees' punctured soles in the work environment. Associations among environmental, individual factors and employees' sole puncturing in the work environment were also examined. Workers who perceived higher levels of workplace problems had significantly increased risks of sole puncturing in the work environment. These results suggest that environmental factors and individual factors in the workplace have a profound impact on puncturing of employees´ soles. This study identifies the major types of factors influencing sole puncturing for further investigation.
