本文試圖從回顧近代中國社會史近五十年的發展，探討近年地域史研究的重要性。地域研究一方面回應五十年代社會控制論之不足，同時也承繼了傅衣凌、梁方仲對階級理論的批判與發展。本文旨在說明，地方研究的作用，並不局限於地方史，而是對社會不同時期性質的探討。

This essay reflects on the development of Modern Chinese Social History in the past fifty years to explore the importance of local studies. A focus on local studies has come about in response to the theory of social control in the 1950s and in succession to Fu Yiling and Liang Fangzhong's criticism and revision of a class theory approach to history. This essay argues that local studies should be of much greater interest to historians than a description of local conditions: they deal with questions about the nature of society at different times.
