Tourists sometimes seek wayfinding information from the locals while traveling in unfamiliar countries to decrease the possibility of getting lost. However, the wayfinding information provided by the locals might end up confusing the tourists because people have different ways of expressing spatial information. This study investigates a tourists' preferences for different types of wayfinding direction descriptors provided by the locals for their wayfinding in unfamiliar destinations such as left/right turn, directions, or distance; analyzes the factors that influence their preferences on wayfinding direction descriptors; and then investigates any differences existing between the types of wayfinding direction information provided by the local and needed by the international tourists. According to the results of the study, international tourists with different wayfinding strategy preferences, gender and culture background have different preferences towards wayfinding direction information. International tourists have different preferences towards wayfinding direction information when they are information providers and receivers.
