In the past decade though many researchers contributed themselves to promoting students' learning motivation in English classrooms, some have ignored the fact that learners' English proficiency influences their learning motivation a lot. Therefore, based on 149 freshmen at a four-year institute of technology who played roles in English class, this study is to explore the relationship between learners' English proficiency and their positive attitudes toward English learning. The results show that learners at different English proficiency levels have different positive attitudes toward English learning in terms of the interest in English, the expectation of attending English class, the courage to speak English and the self-confidence in English class. This paper also gives suggestions for the teaching materials and teaching methods in English classrooms.
