”Unacquainted” and ”acquainted” are special labeling terminologies in traditional Chinese literatures that describe tribes are not akin to Han people. The distinctions between these two terminologies include the tribe distance from the Hans' residential location, and whether or not the tribe serves in the Imperial Court or pays taxes. Another basis for determination is the level of civilization; where unacquainted means that the tribes are still in a semi-primitive stage, and acquainted means that their level of civilization is close to that of the Hans. In addition, the so- called Hans and non-Hans are not strictly defined; there are many ambiguities along the boundaries. Many Hans and Mans (non-Hans, regarded as barbarians) had overlapping territories and influenced each other; changes could also occur between acquainted and unacquainted tribes. This paper compiled relevant descriptions of these terminologies and distinguishes the differences between the tribes. |
