Many school buildings were built in early time at Taiwan. The design criteria and construction specifications, used in construction of those school buildings, cannot meet the contemporary up-to-date earthquake codes of buildings. Those buildings tend to become fragile during earthquake. In addition, most land of Taiwan are located in mountain area. Many schools were built on the hills. The water and earth preservation is another important issue for those school buildings on hills. In this study, we conduct a field investigation of Cha-Win elementary school at Miaoli, which serves as a case study for school on hills. There are many ground settlement in campus and damage in buildings in Cha-Win elementary school. Investigations, surveys, and slope stability analysis are conducted in this study. The results reveal that school is safe in general, raining, in earthquake and earthquake with raining cases for Chao-wen elementary school. Soil erosion is severe in the school. Drainage problem with heavy rain is the root cause for soil erosion. We recommend that the authority of schools on hills shall pay attentions on maintenance of drainage system in campus of schools on hills.
