The aim of this study was to analyze whether gender roles of illicit drug users affect their relationships with family members. A qualitative research approach was adopted to collect data. Thirteen illicit drug users living in central Taiwan were interviewed. The findings indicated that gender roles of male respondents were embedded in the economy, culture and social class. For male respondents, illegal use of drugs was not only expected as an expression of masculinity, but also governed the gender role they could not fulfill. Moreover, male respondents were more likely to be accommodated by their families of origin and excluded from their self-organized families. Female respondents faced relationship and emotional difficulties due to illegal drug use. They were more likely to be excluded from both their families of origin and their self-organized families.
