This study aims to examine the degree of residents' participation, choice and control in their community living at six group homes provided by six residential units for adults with intellectual disabilities in Taiwan. A standardized questionnaire was utilized to collect 96 residents' data. Majority participants recognized ”here” were their ”homes” and responded that they ”like” and ”like very much” ”here”. On the contrary, only small number of participants have been involved in decision making moving to ”here”, home designed and decoration and had the keys of the houses. Less than 20 percent of the participants who could make decision who to live with as their roommates and housemates. Thirty to 70 percent of the participants were free in their routine daily life activities, such as time of getting up, going to bed, listening to music, watching TV, etc. Majority (60%) of the adults responded that they ”love” or ”love very much” to go out for participating activities; ”teachers” and ”roommates/housemates” were most frequently went out with. Nearly 70 percent of the adults would consult their ”teachers” when they were unhappy; 70 percent of adults answered they had good friends and for their ”good friends” mostly means their roommates or housemates. Fifty percent of adults had interaction with the neighbors and 70 percent of adults replied they ”like” their neighbors. Half of adults expressed that they hoped to marry with someone and have their own children. This study recommends the services providers should increase the opportunities for residents to be involved in community activities, utilize community facilities and interact with people Without disability; decrease the staff's control on residents' daily life.
