Although the right to work of people challenged with mental illness has been claimed by the antidiscrimination items, their employment is still full of difficulties in reality. The hospital employment program initiated by Taipei Labour Bureau was taken as an example to clarify the policy implementation context of employment of people with mental illness. How they perceived the impacts of community rehabilitation on their life, and what forces sustain their worker role were also further explored. It was found that without support from the mental health unit, the link between health rehabilitation and vocational services would be short-term, and the employment programs failed to sustain. As to the impacts of rehabilitation activities, beside releasing family tension, extending social networks, and enhancing self-esteem, it also worked as a buffer to employment, together with the support from significant others, the ongoing struggle with illness, and personal meaning of work, all contributed to a sense-of-self as a worker.
