This study focuses on the issue of work-family interface that has long existed for many years but has received less attention: The impact process of instant messaging of job demands during non-working hours on work and family, and the gender differences in the process. Drawing on the perspective of job demand-control-support model, this study employed 305 full-time workers as a sample to explore the impact of instant messaging of job demands during non-working hours on the employees' work-family balance. The results show that the instant messaging of job demands during non-working hours negatively affect the work-family balance of employees, and this relationship is partially mediated by the negative emotions. In addition, the mediating effect is significant in males but not in females. Moreover, high job control helps to slow down the positive relationship between the instant messaging of job demands and negative emotions, and high family support helps to slow down the negative relationship between negative emotions and work-family balance.
