中文摘要

India and the Korean Peninsula share centuries old historical and cultural relations. But the recent developments in the relationship between India and the Korean Peninsula has its origins in the changes made by India in its economic and foreign policy after the end of the Cold War. India is among the few countries in the world which have maintained cordial relations with both North and South Korea. Despite India's worries over the proliferation of nuclear and missile technology by North Korea, New Delhi has maintained diplomatic relations with Pyongyang and has been providing it humanitarian and educational support. At the same time India has developed close economic, political and strategic ties with South Korea. The fiercely nationalist regime in the North has shown trust in India; on the other hand, South Korean leaders have also been seeking India's support on the issue of unification of the Korean Peninsula and denuclearization of North Korea. The present government in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pursuing the "Act East" policy to engage with the East Asian region in a more effective way. In this context the developing relations between India and the Korean Peninsula would be important for India's engagement with East Asia. This paper makes a comparative analysis of the evolution of India's policy toward the two Koreas.
