1965年新加坡脫離馬來西亞獨立，聯合邦境內的高等教育學府僅存馬來亞大學一所，學生升學競爭相當激烈，到台灣各大學及新加坡南洋大學留學成為華族高中畢業生重要的升學途徑。1967年馬來西亞教育部長宣布將對出國留學的資格加以限制，促使馬來西亞華族決心籌辦自己的大學，但1969年「513種族衝突事件」的爆發，導致籌辦活動的停止。為了謀求華族青年的出路，位於柔佛新山的寬柔中學決定設立專科班，招收高中畢業生，施以商業與馬來語文的專業教育，俾其日後就業。寬柔專科部的設立，為馬來西亞社會培養不少專業人才，並隨著華、巫緊張對立的局勢漸趨緩和，寬柔校方掌握時機，善用策略，將專科部發展為政府立案，可頒發專業文憑的學院，後又升格成為可頒發大學學位的大學學院。寬柔專科部的設立及其後蛻變成功，為馬來西亞華族在維護其母語教育的一大成就，也顯示出海外華族社會深具可塑性的發展特質。

After Singapore left the Federation of Malaysia in 1965, there was only one university in Malaysia at the time. Many Malaysian Chinese students continued their higher education abroad. In 1967, the Ministry of Education announced its intention to narrow the doors of going abroad. The Malaysian Chinese thus planned to establish a private university, namely Merdeka University, for their children. Unfortunately, the May Thirteenth Incident in 1969 interrupted the establishment of the university. In order to provide its high school graduates to continue their studies, the Foon Yew High School in Johor Bahru set up a three-year advanced program. It was called Foon Yew Advanced Studies by the school authorities. With the tenseness between the Malays and the Chinese was loosened in early 1990s, the Foon Yew High School developed the program into a college, namely the Southern College(Kolej Selatan). Then the College became a university college with the authority to confer degrees. The establishment and development of the Foon Yew Advanced Studies show that the Malaysian Chinese can adjust themselves very well in various conditions in maintaining their own education institutions. The Malaysian Chinese surely is a people with great malleability in their adopted land.
