This study was to evaluate the shaping performance in simulated curved canal resin blocks with the nickel-titanium ProTaper instrumentation of the junior (4(superscript th)) and senior (5(superscript th)) dental students of a dental school, and so to aid in choosing a proper system for educational courses for undergraduate students in Taiwan. Junior (n=35) and senior (n=24) dental students were compared. Simulated canals with 40° curves in resin blocks and four newS1, S2, F1 and F2 Pro Taper files for each block were used. Canals were scanned before and after preparation. Composite images were prepared for estimation. Material removed, canal width and canal deviation was measured at five levels, beginning from the apex by the use of AutoCAD 2004 software. The time of preparation was also recorded. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. The preparation time between the two groups was statistically different (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference regarding root canal width between the two groups. The centering canal shape performance of the senior group proved to be statistically better at the apical 3-4mm region in (p<0.05) than that of the junior group. The average working time was 7 to 10 minutes in both groups. Although the senior group performed better in both preparation time and centering canal shape, both groups were able to maintain the same total canal width and continuous tapered shape in canal preparation. The nickel-titanium ProTaper preparation technique is easy to learn and can be taught at the beginning of endodontic curriculum.
