The present study is an investigation of what freshmen in various different departments of a medical campus believe are the primary traits needed by a good nurse. The subjects of the study were students taking the elective general course ”Human Beings and Medicine” at a national university in northern Taiwan. Following a class in which the topic was ”Developments in Nursing”, students were given an assignment by their instructor in which they were asked to describe the primary traits of a good nurse. A total of 258 assignments were analyzed in the present study. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the sexes in terms of their opinions of the primary traits of a good nurse. When it came to students in different departments, nursing students tended to believe that the primary traits of good nurses were professional characteristics such as professional knowledge, caring, and accountability. This contrasted with students in the Department of Medicine, together with other students at the medical campus not in the Department of Medicine and not in the Department of Nursing, who tended to believe that the primary traits were personal characteristics such as patience, kind-heartedness, and helpfulness. In particular, students not in the Department of Medicine who were non-nursing students believed more strongly than nursing students or medical students that personal characteristics described the primary traits of a good nurse. The results of the present study may be applied to medical and nursing education in order to help future medical professionals develop an appropriate understanding of the nursing profession. The results will also help to reconcile the different expectations of doctors and nurses when it comes to what makes a good nurse. This will help to promote awareness and cooperation between doctors and nurses, and make it possible for patients to obtain positive benefits from the health care system. Finally, such an understanding will also enhance the image of nurses.
