In the context of continuing medical education, participating in the ISQua (International Society for Quality in Health Care) meeting is a good approach to obtain a better understanding of healthcare quality and patient safety in relation to hospital accreditation issues. This area of traditional and academic medical education has been seen as unimportant for a long time but the area is now reemerging as important. This symposium consisted of a pre-conference, the main conference, professional visits, and a post-conference mentorship program. The meeting also paid heed to educational, cultural and workforce related issues. The author presents his own experiences and opinions while making comparisons with respect to the content of the program. The three previous meetings held in Boston, Copenhagen and Paris are also analyzed to identify possible trends. The main features at the Boston meeting were related to the classifications of patient safety and accreditation together with clinical quality improvement. This contrasted with Copenhagen where knowledge of safety care and the application of Information Technology in Quality Improvement were emphasized. The next meeting in Paris placed emphasize on Board leadership, quality, clinical audit teams, and integrated health care. Based on the above, it is clear that medical education needs to add health care quality and patient safety into the formal medical education curriculum in the future in order to give students the opportunity to be exposed early in their career to these important issues. |
