Since the late 20(superscript th) century, medical professionals are faced with challenges that have never been so important before. The traditional way of teaching medical students in a lecture hall with a particular emphasis on scientific knowledge is getting more and more insufficient. Like the Seven Liberal Arts in the Western World, the Six Arts (Rites, Music, Archery, Charioting, Calligraphy, and Mathematics) in ancient China, firmly rooted in Confucian philosophy, is essential for the education towards cultivating a perfect gentleman. Based on the concepts of the Six Arts and the aims of medical humanities education in Taiwan, we proposed several points for integrating scientific knowledge and humanistic courses in medical education for cultivating a perfect medical professional.
