Palliative care models have been developed and put into practice in Taiwan for more than 20 years. However, the progress of comprehensive training programs is still in its early stages, and most nursing training modules are lacking in related courses. Thus, it is critical to examine the appropriateness and integrity of the contents in the teaching materials relating to end-of-life care (EC) on which training for students and registered nurses is based. The purpose of this study is to review the contents and distribution of published Chinese nursing textbooks in Taiwan during 1945-2009, and the percentage of contents devoted to EC in each textbook. We identified 203 nursing textbooks published within these years, with 84 books, 41.3% of the total books, containing contents related to EC. The first textbook introducing concepts of EC was published in 1992, but it was not until the year 2000 that textbooks with related topics were prevalent in Taiwanese nursing programs. However, although there are now more nursing textbooks containing contents related to EC, the contents are still quite low; in required courses 1.76% of textbook content was related to EC and in elective courses, 2.07%. Moreover, we found a significantly lower percentage of contents relating to EC when compared with foreign textbooks. Among all aspects of EC content in textbooks, ”basic concepts” and ”symptoms control” were the top two aspects that were included in the textbooks; while ”communication” and ”ethics” were the two least mentioned aspects. The majority of the textbooks with content relating to EC were for nursing students in their sophomore year, followed by textbooks for third-year college students. Additionally, this study examined planning for future development of end-of-life content in nursing textbooks and discussed suggestions for contents to be included in future nursing education materials. |
