The Effects of Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Education: Satisfaction and Self-reported Outcomes of Student Fieldwork Experiences

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of occupational therapy fieldwork education based upon the self-reported outcomes and satisfaction levels of participating students. Methods: The data on the fieldwork outcomes and effects were obtained from Level II fieldwork questionnaire surveys undertaken in Taiwan. Of the total of 111 respondents, 49 had used the internet-based questionnaire and 62 had used ”hard copy” questionnaires. The subjects were recruited from six universities carrying out Level II fieldwork at 23 sites throughout Taiwan. Most of the subjects (76.6%) were female, 62.1% had studied at either the National Taiwan University or I-Shou University. The average score for satisfaction with Level II fieldwork education was 80.4 (SD=10.4), whilst the average score for self-reported performance was 74.7 (SD=9.5). Results: The results revealed that the students generally paid high regard to the supervisor and had positive perception of their own learning effect. They also expressed dissatisfaction in terms of lack of time to finish their assignment, lack of opportunities to observe and use different frame of reference etc. The results also demonstrated a high significant correlation between the students' self-rated overall level of satisfaction with their supervisor (ρ=0.75). A significant moderate correlation was also found between self-perceived capacity and self-rated overall level of satisfaction with the fieldwork experience. Conclusion: The results of this study should prompt occupational therapy educators to carefully reevaluate the structure of the fieldwork environment, communicate with fieldwork supervisors, and strengthen the adaptation of students to enhance the overall effects of Level II fieldwork.
