Objectives: Problem-based learning (PBL) has been one of the most popular innovative medical education strategies in recent years; much research has been conducted and discussion forums on this subject have been actively formed. However, different interpretations and applications of PBL have created many complicated and chaotic situations that interfere with communication among researchers and hinder its further development and advances. In this article, we intended to propose a nomenclature system for PBL identification from a multifaceted framework. Methods: General theoretical and practical characteristics of PBL were studied, items that are essential or with various versions were identified, a nomenclature system was created to give each PBL program a clear and inclusive label. The categories and content were decided by two authors of this article based on rationales set by literature review, expert opinions and personal experience. The system was applied to examine its feasibility and usefulness. Results: A ”POTAI” nomenclature system for PBL curriculum was created. Issues included were the basic principles of PBL, the way problems were generated, the expertise of tutors, the structure of the program and its relationship with the course it belongs to, and the design of the curriculum to which the PBL program was applied. By looking at the program label, one can easily understand the design of a PBL program so as to make proper interpretation and judgment. Conclusions: For PBL research, conclusions and considerations can be meaningful and useful only by looking at programs of similar structures. We hoped that this nomenclature system could be widely employed to improve PBL quality through better communication and understanding of PBL issues. |
