Background: It is well known that bullying is prevelant among students with low academic performances; however, less attention has been paid to university students with past physical bullying experiences whose academic performences are better. The aim of this study was to explore the physical, social/behavioral and mental characteristics of students with past physical bullying experiences at one of top universities in Taiwan. Methods: A total of 5,362 incoming university students were recruited. The test battery included a self-report questionnaire on past physical bullying experiences, the Measurement of Support Functions, the Chinese Internet Addiction Scale-Revision, Quality of Life assessment, the Brief Symptoms Rating Scale, and the 10-item social desirability scale. Additionally, a health checkup was carried out and health related behavior was investigated. Results: Only individuals with lower social desirability were recruited for further analyses. The rate of past physical bullying experiences (17.7%) was prevalent, among college students with high academic achievement. Individuals with past physical bullying experiences were male predominant, older, and had a higher BMI, poorer social support, a higher Internet addition tendency, and greater emotional disturbance. Conclusion: Using this information, it is plausible to build better strategies for detecting students with a physical bullying history and potential mental morbidity, even for college students with high academic achievement.
