Introduction: This article introduces a workshop using peer roleplay objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to assess the orthopedic casting skills of participants, and evaluates the preliminary result. Methods: 14 participants were classified as senior members (n = 7; residents) and junior members (n = 7; postgraduate year (PGY) residents, and nurse practitioners (NPs)), and randomly allocated to seven teams (two members in each team). There were four questions in this workshop and each team made the decision together and the cast was applied by the assigned member. The scores were given by four attending physicians with a checklist for each question. At the end of the course, trainees completed survey questionnaires related to discomfort while cast application and removal, and the value of this training process. Results: Among junior members, NPs had significantly higher scores in Question 3 (p = 0.03) and slightly higher scores (p = 0.57) in Question 1 than PGYs. Among senior members, senior residents had slightly but not significantly higher scores than junior residents in Questions 2 (p = 0.34) and 4 (p = 0.38). Sweatiness, itching and loss of function were reported as being the source of discomfort. The post-course satisfaction survey indicated that most trainees were satisfied with this course. Conclusion: This workshop successfully implemented peer roleplay OSCE in orthopedic casting skills by quantified skills through a checklist and enabled participants to experience the perspectives of both the clinician and the patient. We hope that this program can be regularly used in orthopedic casting skills training. |
