中文摘要

To share some novel experience of teaching and assessing the skill of direct ophthalmoscopy (DO) in medical students, including the method for making a simple model eye, the timing of DO workshop and the qualification after the workshop. Cylindrical bottles, a trial lens and a fundus photograph were assembled to form a model eye. A workshop on practicing DO was offered to medical students before or during their ophthalmology rotation. Questionnaires regarding their experience of using DO were collected and analyzed. The model eye, with changeable pupil sizes, lens powers and fundus photographs, simulates a real eye and can be used for practicing DO. All the students can meet the requirement of correctly identifying three landmarks on the retina of the model eye after the DO workshop. Their attitude of performing DO can be improved after such training and exposure. The attitude of performing DO was relatively passive among medical students, even during their ophthalmology rotation. Appropriate lectures/training and teaching materials could improve such conditions.
