Soil N is one of the major sources of N for rice and this could be managed well through organic matter addition and promotion of biological nitrogen fixation in the soil. Compost offers major advantages over other forms of organic fertilizers. The developed Trichoderma-Azotobacter inoculated compost or simply bio-organic fertilizer technology has shown potential in improving rice crop growth and yield. The technology makes use of mixture of rice straw and chicken manure at designated proportions in heaps, uses as inoculants, a strain of trichoderma, Trichoderma sp. SS33 and Azotobacter sp. HIBFA 4b to enhance the composting process and increase the nitrogen content of the processed controls are, however, necessary to produce inoculated compost with good quality in terms of improving soil structure, increasing soil organic matter content and supplementing the necessary nutrients needed by the plants. Among others, follow-up and technical support activities are necessary for effective transfer of technology that will help sustain inoculated compost production and utilization. |
