|In modern society, the media plays an important role in information dissemination. Therefore, the importance of subtitle translation is increasing day by day. This study takes the Japanese film "Departures" as the research object, observes the characteristics of reduction and addition of Chinese subtitles, and discusses the impact of the reduction and addition on the audience. This study found that "fillers", "repetitive performance", "non-verbal sounds", and "brief periods", which are not related to propositional contents of conversations, were often removed from the subtitles. In addition, in order to "complement the meaning of the sentence", "clarify referred content", and "explicate metaphorical expression and taboo words", additional semantics are supplemented to lessen the audiences' burden of inferring the content of the lines. There search results show that the subtitle translations do not present the characters' dialogues in the play, but rather the specific content of the dialogues. As a result, the emotional ups and downs of the characters and their relationship with each other will become flatter than the original movie due to the deletion and addition of subtitles. This is a phenomenon that learners should pay attention to when watching movies to learn Japanese.
