本篇研究主要目的為探討發生於運動員之運動猝死與心血管疾病之間的相關性。運動員由於其較高的訓練標準、競賽壓力及對自身體力過度自信等原因，發生運動猝死的比例為非運動員的2.5倍。根據統計結果發現，運動員運動猝死的主要原因為心臟血管疾病（56%）。其中導致35歲以下年輕運動員發生運動猝死的原因多為先天性的心臟疾病，其中肥厚型心肌病占了心血管疾病種類的約三分之一，然而，運動所造成之心肌重塑卻又使運動員比一般人更難透過臨床診斷發現肥厚型心肌病，另外還包括心震顫、先天型冠狀動脈異常、心肌炎及遺傳疾病馬凡氏症患者。其他造成年輕運動員運動猝死的原因則有心震顫及馬凡氏症候群。此外，35歲以上成年運動員運動猝死的原因主要為冠狀動脈疾病。本篇介紹造成運動員運動猝死的心血管疾病，並為預防運動員之運動猝死，更進一步介紹新型心肺復甦術和美國心臟協會針對競賽型運動員所給予之十二項篩檢項目及執行現況。
