Textbook selection is essential in language teaching. Ever since the Ministry of Education proposed the educational reform, starting English education from grade 5, the number of ELT textbooks has been increasing. To better understand teachers' rationale for textbook selection and to help teachers select a suitable textbook from the many available, one needs to examine not only the criteria that teachers follow in selecting a textbook (i.e., how) but also the contents of the textbook that teachers selected (i.e., what). However, relatively little research has been done to analyze and compare the content of different textbooks. The purpose of this study is four-fold: 1) to survey teachers' satisfaction level with the textbooks used in the academic year 2001, 2) to understand the decision-making process of elementary English teachers in selecting a textbook for the academic year 2002, 3) to find out the most popular ELT textbooks used in Taichung and Miao-li County in the academic year 2002, and 4) to analyze and compare the content of five ELT textbooks. It was found that while teachers seem to have a consensus on the relative weight each criterion carries, the textbooks chosen by teachers are not identical. Moreover, the analysis of five selected textbooks shows differences in the total number of vocabulary covered, sentence patterns and themes covered among textbooks.
