不論有氧或阻力運動,除了運動中之外,在運動後的恢復期皆能增加額外的能量消耗。運動強度對於運動後過攝氧量(EPOC)的影響大於運動持續時間,有氧與阻力運動的強度增加,EPOC的持續時間與總量亦隨著增加。有氧運動強度高於50-60% VO_(2max)時,運動持續時間會與EPOC的持續時間呈線性關係。而進行阻力運動後需要比有氧運動消耗更多的能量來恢復身體的恆定,相對強度的阻力運動比有氧運動的EPOC要來得高。有氧與阻力運動對於能量消耗上的生理意義各有不同,而不論有氧或阻力運動,強度越高、持續時間越長的運動對於運動後能量消耗皆有越顯著的效果,在能量消耗的觀點上,期提供作為開立運動處方的參考。
