棒球投手複雜的投擲動作造成肩膀、肘關節的運動傷害,已有相當廣泛的研究。近年來的研究也鎖定在投球機轉、與投擲不同變化球進行深入的探討,並發現不同變化球間確實存在著運動學上的差異,尤其是前臂、手腕等部位。變化球確實依靠手腕和手指的動作造成球體的旋轉,許多研究的結果顯示手腕主要的功能在於控制投擲的精確度,產生球體的變化;另一方面,手指除了影響投擲精確度和產生變化球外,最主要的功能則是在加速期間產生對抗球體的反向力。因此投擲不同球種、不同重量的球體、投擲目標的遠近高低或是投擲速度上的快慢,皆仰賴手指精密的動作控制。
