現代的足球運動比賽過程對抗性強、速度節奏快速是眾所皆知的特徵，要想成爲完美的球員，就必須精通各種攻擊和防守的技巧，其中頭頂球的基本動作，更是不可獲缺的要項。然而高碰撞及短時間的比賽過程中，頭部的撞擊對於作用肌群會產生相當大的負荷，再加上球體大小、球的加速度和方向等，對整個頂球動作所造成的潛在危險性相對地提高。因此在足球教學或訓練過程中，對於動作技術的分析和示範，更顯現出其重要性。頭頂球的動作雖不致於對腦造成傷害，但仍有研究指出不當的動作技巧會引起頭頸部的疼痛，嚴重則會造成記憶的喪失。因此在訓練過程中讓球員體會正確的頂球部位及感覺，避免運動傷害的發生，如此才能夠在比賽中充份地發揮攻擊與防守的動作。
