Recently, whole body vibration training is widely used in sport training and fitness programs for general population. Numerous studies have demonstrated that vibration training can significantly improve muscular function, increase range of motion and attenuate the level of DOMS. In the present review, the physiological mechanism as well as the effects of vibration training on energy expenditure during and after exercise were discussed. Research indicated that vibration training can significantly increase oxygen consumption, and a positive relationship is found between intensity of vibration training (frequency × amplitude) and oxygen consumption. In addition, vibration training intervention has a significant influence on energy expenditure during resistance training and after recovery. However, little research related to this issue has been conducted. Further study is needed to examine issues like the effects of vibration training on energy expenditure during exercise.
