The cost of the surgical materials for operation occupies over fifty percent of a hospital budget. Accurate and proper management of the category A surgical materials for operation may effectively control business operations and inventory costs. The inventory shortage rate of surgical materials for operation was 12.6% in June of 2010. This project aims to improve the inventory shortage rate of category A surgical materials for general operation. The situational analysis indicated that the major reasons for a high inventory shortage rate of category A materials included human error, lack of a management information system, an incomplete process of managing surgical materials, and a lack of an educational training plan. An improvement project included developing a management information system, regulating managerial methods for category A materials, centralizing management of surgical materials for operation, compiling a handbook for common category A materials, planning an educational training program for the staff, revising the current storage inventory amount, and setting up an auditing mechanism. After the project was implemented, the inventory shortage rate of surgical materials for operation and incident report in 2011 decreased to zero percent, and the integrity rate of the management information system reached 100 percent. This project effectively improved the inventory shortage rate of category A surgical materials for general operation. The manager could fully control the use of category A surgical materials to prevent human-operated errors, ensure surgical operation safety, and effectively control the inventory cost of surgical materials in the operating room.
