The scientific study of workaholism began to emerge in Western academia half a century ago and has since reaped substantial and compelling (if at times divisive) results. In the Greater China Region, however, it is still in its embryo stage. The present study reviews existing Western research to trace the development progress of workaholism and assess the usefulness of its measurements. The concept of workaholism is then compared with other comparable concepts (such as work passion, work engagement, and Type A personality traits) to more precisely delineate its uniqueness. Moreover, our study focuses on the emerging research of workaholism in Japan and Taiwan, uncovering its cultural connotations and providing suggestions based on self-determination theory for future research.
