To help care for primary school children suffering from trauma after the Typhoon Morakot in 2009, the Ministry of Education advocated for college students to participate in care programs in the disaster area. This paper describes how two junior college students developed a sustained health promotion program for a primary school in the southern area of Taiwan. The primary school children participated in multiple health activities and learned health promotion concepts to cope with the trauma of such a disaster. During the program, school children answered a stress questionnaire 3 times. At the beginning of the program, 37 students (54.5%) were placed in the high-risk anxiety group. After the 10-month stress-reducing program, only 10 students (27.8%) remained in the anxiety group. However, with the impending typhoon season, the number in the high-risk group increased to 11 (37.9%) at the end stage of the program. The screening result was used as a reference to provide further assistance and case management for students with high anxiety. This program focused on promoting a healthy life-style and coping with stress for primary school children. In addition, the program focused on the development of a supportive network system with young volunteers. Most of the primary school children hoped that the program would be continued. We searched for related organizations to provide subsidies to promote and train young volunteers to conduct these programs. The care program with health promotion concepts may be an effective strategy to help children suffering from anxiety due to trauma.
