福樓拜執筆《包法利夫人》的年代，法國開始關注私人生活。精英文化與大眾文化融合，小說、傳媒、時尚、休閒引導新興小市民的生活品味，巴黎成了時代之風。它的繁華富麗既具有上流社會視野，又包容俗世人生的一切慾望，成了易於消費的象徵，並捲起自然人工化、心理物品化、生活戲劇化的現代性漩渦。女性的內在、外在全張戴著這個文化符碼。愛瑪的一生尤其被刻劃了不可磨滅的印記。

By the mid-nineteenth century while Flaubert wrote Madame Bovary, the French middle class had already become the pillars of the society and drove people's retrospection from the public spheres to the private ones. The elite culture started to merge with the public tastes: novels, media, fashions, and recreations had modified the living trend of the emerging citizenship and also established the reputation of Paris as the center of vogue. The splendid vanity along with gorgeous extravagancy indulged itself with both the magnificent perspectives of the upper-class and every possible lust in worldly life, and marked itself as a consumable symbol with the turbulent modernity including artificial nature, materialized state of mind and dramatized living. The female internality, as well as the intra-domains, were all attached with this cultural code. Emma's life was especially carved with some indelible marks.
