斯特恩的怪書《項狄傳》是關於男人的故事，女性人物出面很少，話語不多；批評界很少關注小說中的女性形象。但反復閱讀此書，筆者覺得姑奶奶黛娜、寡婦沃德曼和母親三個女性形象值得認真探討：如果說小說表面文本刻畫了男性如何控制女性，透過這種表像則可以看某種女性抗爭男權的潛文本，是對男性主導意識的挑戰。
英文摘要

Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy is a book about men, especially about men's hobby horses, and consequently little critical attention has been paid to the female characters who rarely appear and often remain silent when they do appear. But with a close reading of the text, I find that aunt Dinah, widow Wadman and Mrs, Shandy deserve serious scrutiny. If the surface text demonstrates how the Shandy men manage to control women, the subtext may show that women are not easily controlled but try hard to assert their own desires and express their own interests. In other words, beneath the male dominant surface, there might be some subversive challenges to that dominance.
