As neonatal and obstetric medical care advances, the need for neonatal physical therapists increases. Newborns are infants who are relatively vulnerable physiologically, behaviorally, and developmentally. Especially neonates in the complex environment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) pose a great challenge to both therapists and intern students. The purpose of this article is to (1) explore the neonatal physical therapy courses in entry-level physical therapy in advanced countries in Europe and North America, as well as the educational goals and core competencies of neonatal physical therapists; (2) understand the current implementation and clinical teaching of neonatal physical therapy in Taiwan hospitals; (3) and then put forward specific suggestions for the neonatal physical therapy in the course of pediatric physical therapy in Taiwan. After searching for the related courses of pediatric physical therapy in 63 universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries, referring to guidelines of the Section on Pediatrics of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapist of the United Kingdom, and looking into the data of 15 hospitals that practice neonatal physical therapy and provide clinical practicum /teaching, this article proposes a preliminary but specific professional education curriculum and goals for neonatal physical therapy in Taiwan. |
