This study investigated the differences in effects of qigong regimen exercise on adults' electroencephalogram spectral power and WHO questionnaire on quality of life, BREF Taiwan Version (WHOQOL-BREF-Taiwan). The subjects consisted of 70 adults and were divided into three groups based on the duration of practicing. The experienced practitioners' group (the LT, n=19), the beginning practitioners' group (the ST, n=25), and the control group (the CTL, n=26). This study has been reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiao-kang Hospital. All subjects were measured with their brain waves, and were asked to fill in a Questionnaire of WHOQOL-BREF-Taiwan before and after the experiment. The measurement of the brain waves adopted the 10-20 system and Fp1, FPz, Fp2, F3, Fz, F4, F7, F8, C3, Cz, C4, T3, T4, T5, T6, P3, Pz and P4 were chosen as the target sites for recording. Throughout the 13-minute measurement process, a subject was expected to hold a supine position and closing eyes when the researcher picked the data during the 5-minute interval of α wave between the third to the eighth minutes. All the data were analyzed using the software of SPSS 12.01 for Window, with one-way ANOVA observed. The significance level was set at α=.05. The results indicated that for the measurement of the change of brain waves, overall the average α wave power of the LT was greater than those of the ST and the CTL, p<.05. The information generated here suggested that Qigong regimen exercise could have the benefits of dispelling nervousness and creating relaxation. With regard to the result of the Questionnaire of WHOQOL-BREF-Taiwan, by large the LT outperformed the other two groups in terms of the overall condition of health, environment, physiology, psychology, and the ST was better than the CTL for the same criteria. It is concluded that long-term practice of Qigong regimen exercises functions to stabilize and enhance spiritual movements. Functions as such help to keep Qigong practitioners in a state of spiritual relaxation.
