Handedness is a kind of human biological character which is affected by gene and social culture. Except right-handers and left-handers, there is another type of left-handed writers, who were educated to write by their right hands. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of handedness and different writing conditions on writing accuracy. Thirty-seven elementary school students (age: 11.6±0.6y) from Taichung were selected to be participants, and assigned into three groups. Group-1 included eleven left-handers by right-hand writing. Group-2 consisted of twelve left-handers and group-3 consisted of fourteen right-handers according to the handedness. The participants were required to copywriting under different wielding directions (forward and reverse) and stroke directions (upright and horizontal) by both dominant and non-dominant hands separately. The writing results were compared to reference sample to calculate the stroke deviated area. One-way repeated measure ANOVAS were used to analyze the writing performance in different conditions. Results showed that: 1. Students' performance in group-1 was significantly better than other groups in the condition of writing upright-word by the dominant hand. However, the performance of both group-1 and group-2 were significantly better than group-3 in writing upright-word by the non-dominant hand. 2. In writing the horizontal word conditions, the differences among three groups were not significant. According to the research questions and the results from this study, it is concluded that: 1. Handedness affected the performance of upright-word writing accuracy of dominant and non-dominant hands. 2. The writing accuracy was affected by the writing hand and the stroke direction. |
