From a historical point of view, the musical variety and diversity we see in today's Hakka tea picking folk songs are rooted in historical backgrounds; the result of years of incorporation and assimilation of foreign musical elements. Because these foreign musical elements came from different sources and arrived at different historical timeframes, the entrance, incorporation and assimilation into the folk song system displayed mixed effects whereas some elements may have been fully assimilated itself into the system while other elements are still in the early stages of incorporation. This is especially noticeable doing actual performances. Nevertheless, this disruptive and complex musical phenomenon is in itself a unique culture of the tea picking folk songs. This essay seeks to analyze and discuss this unique and strange phenomenon. |
