20世際末，國際上興起了「文化交流劇場」(Intercultural Theatre)的觀念，也就是以異國文化、劇場形式、特質，來彼此豐富，並相互激盪出新的劇場形式，許多世界級的歐美劇場大師，如彼得•布魯克(Peter Brook)、莫努虛金(Ariane Mnouchkine)、尤金尼奧•巴芭(Eugenio Borba)、理察•謝喜納(Richard Schechner)等，均紛紛開始對東方傳統劇場產生了極大的興趣。 傳統京劇，蘊含了東方人文思維，擁有豐富的表演程式、虛實相生的舞台觀念，及觀眾劇場的獨特審美，這項高齡兩百多歲、以演員表演為中心的表演藝術，我們的傳統，是面對國際的最佳儀態，戲曲的元素，是與異國文化交流最好的語彙。 筆者近20年來，在實務演出、導演創作及戲曲教學中來去，並數十次參與國際巡演、國際會議。越是在國際平台上，就越覺得傳統京劇元素之好、之高、之妙。然而，傳統在當代，京劇在台灣，卻面臨了種種困境，如何能另闢蹊徑，是本文探索的旨趣。

In the late 20th century a new idea called Intercultural Theater began to gain international popularity. This new idea calls for the exchange and interaction between different forms of performing arts from different cultures and countries in the hopes that it may spark new theatrical forms to be developed. Many world-renowned European playwrights such as Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, Eugenio Barba, and Richard Schechner began to take a great interest in traditional Eastern Theater. Traditional Beijing Opera is the very essence of Eastern culture and civilization. It is marked by rich performances, art-meet-life dramas, and the unique interaction between the play and its audiences. This 200 year old art form is centered on the performances of the actors. Beijing Opera is the perfect vehicle to interact with the world, in order to illustrate the beauty and sound of Eastern culture. The author has been involved in performances, directing, and education of Beijing Opera for over 20 years and has participated in dozens of international performances and forums. The author feels that more involved one is in the international performing arts community; the more one can appreciate the fine beauty and subtleness of traditional Beijing Opera. However, Beijing Opera has recently suffered from numerous setbacks in Taiwan and this essay will discuss on exploring new ways to revive traditional Beijing Opera for a new age.
