The book ”Bushido: The Soul of Japan,” published by Nitobe Inazô in 1899, has been greatly influencing on the Western's understanding to Japan. In spite of the oriental title ”Bushido,” the book in fact elaborates the communication and interaction between Christianity-Bible and Bushido. Such critical thought, however, is not just derived from Nitobe but earlier sparked in pieces launched by an active Christianity thinker, Uemura Masahisa. In other words, nowadays if we intend to completely understand about the preliminary thought of Nitobe's ”Bushido: The Soul of Japan,” the relationship discussed by Uemura between Christianity and Bushido can never be neglected or excluded. So far there is plenty of respective research on thought of Nitobe or thought of Uemura in academic circles; nonetheless, there still exists a gap of an investigation on the connections between Nitobe's preliminary thought and Uemura. This thesis hence focuses on the basis of the ”Christianity and Bushido” in 1894 and the ”Bushido of Christianity” in 1898 announced by Uemura, to newly conduct analysis and corroboration. The finding thus demonstrates the following: the former piece implies that Christianity should be the new subject that Bushido depended on, while the later piece indicates that a chapter in ”The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians in the New Testamen” is Bushido in Christian way. Such sharp observation upon connections between Christianity and Bushido was not only unprecedented in the history of Japanese Christianity but also the very threads of thought that Nitobe Inazô's Bushido: The Soul of Japan” succeeded. This connection has been ignored for a long time. |
